Q Discussion 1: Leadership Roles and Responsibilities If one person could represent everything about an organization’s mission and vision, who would that person be? How do the individuals leading an organization shape the outcomes? What roles and responsibilities do these individuals fulfill to ensure the success of an organization? An executive director of a NPO/NGO fulfills a role comparable to the chief executive officer (CEO) of a for-profit organization. NPOs tend to use the title of executive director to avoid the business connotation that the title of CEO usually evokes. Recent trends, however, indicate that NPOs and NGOs have begun to use the title of CEO/president more frequently within the nonprofit sector. The individual in this position often personifies the organization. He or she typically acts as the chief spokesperson for the organization and embodies the vision and mission of the NPO. In very small NPOs, the executive director/president/CEO may be the only paid employee in the organization. In this Discussion, you will select an executive director job description for an existing nonprofit/non-government organization. Then, you will identify characteristics and qualities you possess that would qualify you for that job and how you could plan to obtain the position. For this Discussion, review your Learning Resources and focus on the roles and responsibilities of leaders and managers in the nonprofit/non-government sector. Consider how you would describe the job of an ideal executive director for your selected organization. Imagine yourself applying for this job and consider how you could prepare yourself to be hired. Post by Day 3 the following: • A job description that includes the roles and responsibilities (including those that are management versus leadership tasks) for the executive director position of the organization you are studying • A description of why you think you would be an ideal candidate for this position • The steps you could take to obtain the position Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and outside scholarly sources. Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings by: • Suggesting additional roles and responsibilities • Providing resources to support the identification of ideal NPO/NGO leadership Continue to engage with your colleagues through Day 7 in an academic discussion in which you contribute multiple meaningful, substantive ideas, suggestions, and insights on the focus topic. Present your posts and responses in a polished, professional manner with scholarly support. Click on the Reply button below to reveal the textbox for entering your message.
